Energous becomes the FCC’s first certified “power-at-a-distance” charging technology

Today’s wireless charging technology isn’t exactly ideal, with most cable-less chargers requiring direct contact to function and utilises standards that are often proprietary and incompatible with a range of devices. While today’s wireless chargers can be easier to use than cable-based solutions, they are far from ideal, making many yearn for what is known as “power-at-a-distance” technology. 

Energous has been creating RF-based (Radio Frequency) wireless charging tech for quite some time, showcasing wireless charging at distances of up to 15-feet as far back as 2014. The Federal Communications Commission in the USA has officially certified the company’s WattUp Wire-Free charging tech, stating that the device is safe to use and adheres t the industry’s safety requirements and meets the standard for Wireless charging 2.0. 

Watt-Up can deliver power to devices at distances of up to three feet, offering the ability to charge multiple devices using contact and non-contact based methods simultaneously. This technology opens up a whole new range of possibilities for wireless charging, moving the industry beyond contact-based wireless solutions. 

Below is a comment from Stephen Rizzone, the president and CEO of Energous, stating how much of an impact Energous’ WattUp ecosystem can do for future portable devices. 

  Older wireless charging technologies have received limited adoption over the past 15 years, and are confined to contact-based charging only. The FCC certification of Energous’ power-at-a-distance wireless charging transmitter is a major market milestone. It opens up options, outside of just contact-based charging, to Wireless Charging 2.0: an ecosystem where devices can be charged both, via pad and at a distance,

Untethered, wire-free charging — such as charging a fitness band even while wearing it — is exactly what consumers have been waiting for. We are now in a position to move our consumer electronics, IoT and smart home customers forward at an accelerated pace.

 

 
Energous will be demonstrating their WattUp technology at CES 2018, which takes place between January 9th and 12th at Las Vegas.
