Gabe Newell thinks Xbox Series X is better than PlayStation 5

Since March, Gabe Newell and his close relatives have been living in New Zealand, extending a family vacation after the global coronavirus epidemic continued escalated across the globe.

With coronavirus cases continuing to surge within the US, Gabe Newell has made New Zealand his temporary home, and this has landed the US billionaire onto local news.

During a brief interview, around 3 minutes in, Gabe Newell was questioned about the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, both of which are due to release later this year. When asked which system was the best, Gabe Newell had a quick answer, “the Xbox.”

When asked to the reason behind his answer, Gabe Newell has another fast response, saying “because it’s better”, likely referencing the stronger hardware specifications offered by Microsoft’s system.

Back in March, we compared the specifications of both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, finding that the Xbox Series X offers faster hardware in almost every category. While the PlayStation 5 provides users with a faster storage solution, the Xbox Series X features a stronger graphics card, a CPU which features higher core clock speeds and more memory bandwidth thanks to the system’s larger memory bus.

When it comes to hardware, the Xbox Series X appears to be the superior system. However, it remains to be seen how the PlayStation 5’s faster storage will impact the performance and visuals of cross-platform releases.

When discussing both consoles, Gabe Newell stated that “we [Valve] do most of our development on personal computers. But of the two, I would definitely go with an Xbox [Series X].”

This Holiday season will see the start of a new generation of the console wars, where Sony and Microsoft will battle for market share. Given the size of the gaming market, both platform holders have a lot to gain (or lose) in the conflict. With the power of the Xbox Series X and the value offered by Game Pass be enough to draw gamers away from the PlayStation platform, or will Sony’s talented first-party studios allow Sony to continue on from their success with PlayStation 4?
