Netflix’s The Witcher series will have eight episodes and aims for a 2020 release

Last year, Netflix revealed their plans to create a TV series that is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher universe, the book series which was adapted to produce CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher game series.

At the forefront of the TV series’ development is Lauren S. Hissrich, who has taken the role as the show’s Executive Producer, having already created a pilot script for the show. On Twitter, Hissrich has spoken about the show in-depth, revealing details like the length of the first series, intended episode length and filming locations.

Hissrich made it clear that the show would be unrelated to both the book series and its video game adaptations, acting as a standalone product and a unique adaptation. Below are a few of many comments about the show on Twitter, stating that the show should release in 2020 with eight episodes that will be an hour long each.

Happy Friday! So much information coming out of the @netflix event in Rome. I’m told by my friends and colleagues that the level of excitement and anticipation for #Witcher was crazy! Let’s sort through it…

EIGHT EPISODES. Yes! I know, I know, it may not seem like enough for you, but creatively, it’s the right call. The episodes can be tight, action-packed, rich in character and story, without lagging in the middle of the season. Sounds good to me, sound good to you?

2020. Who knows?! We’re moving quickly ahead with everything — like, my head is spinning around Exorcist-style, except with enthusiasm, not evil possession — but one thing is certain: quality comes before speed. You’ll get it as soon as humanly possible, and it’ll be good.

WE’LL BE SHOOTING IN EASTERN EUROPE. Yes! This show couldn’t exist anyplace else. Period. Also, I just spent ten days surrounded by Slavic eye-candy. I MUST come back, soon.

While 2020 seems like a long time away, remember that only the script for episode one currently exists, which itself will be rewritten and edited as actors are cast, and the filming process begins.

Lauren S. Hissrich has stated that she has “several seasons mapped out” in her mind, though the show’s popularity will ultimately dictate whether or not The Witcher will become an ongoing Netflix series.
