With Samsung being such a multi-faceted company, it is hard for 3rd parties to trust Samsung with their IP, facilitating the need for Samsung to add an additional abstraction layer by creating their own contract chip manufacturing unit that deals exclusively with third parties.
This change will allow companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia to work with Samsung with fewer concerns about the potential leaking of exclusive IP to competing divisions within Samsung. This should help Samsung expand its presence in the chip manufacturing sector and attract additional customers.
Samsung has recently announced that they have finalised the development of their second generation 10nm FinFET manufacturing process, which could attract additional customers to Samsung who wish to take advantage of their latest manufacturing process.
