Sonic the Hedgehog outpaces Detective Pikachu at the US Box Office

Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog has already grossed $57 million at the US box office, a new record for a video game adaptation on its opening weekend.

This record was formerly held by Detective Pikachu, which managed to earn $54.3 million during the same timeframe in the US. Overseas, Sonic the Hedgehog has grossed an estimated $43 million, generating total earnings of $100 million worldwide. This is $61 million behind Detective Pikachu, revealing Sonic’s lesser worldwide appeal.

The blue blur’s filmic success comes despite a troubled history for the movie, which required a rapid redesign of the film’s main character before its release. Even so, the movie’s audience score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes speaks for itself when judging the movie’s enjoyability. That said, the film has received a harsher critical reception, so don’t expect Sonic to win any Oscars.

Sonic the Hedgehog is available to watch in cinemas now.
