Sony adds Cloud Streaming support to their PlayStation Portal

Sony adds Cloud Streaming (BETA) support to its PlayStation Portal handheld

Over a year after launching the device, Sony has delivered a major feature add-on to their PlayStation Portal handheld. Now, users of the PlayStation Portal will be able to access Sony’s Cloud Streaming service, allowing them to play select PlayStation 5 games on the devices.

Previously, the PlayStation Portal could only support in-home streaming from a PlayStation 5 console. With this new update, beta support for PlayStation 5 cloud streaming is available. That said, it is only available to users who opt into the beta and subscribe to Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium service.

Sadly, this beta only supports selected games. PS4 and PS3 game streaming is not supported. Not all PlayStation 5 games will be streamable from the cloud, and features like Party Voice Chat, 3D Audio, and in-game commerce are unsupported. Streaming at up to 1080p 60 FPS will be available.

Features available during the Beta

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
  • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming.
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
  • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

Thanks to this beta, PlayStation Portal users will soon be able to do more with their devices. Currently, the Portal is only useful when a PlayStation 5 is on the same WIFI network. With Cloud Streaming, users can bring their Portal to another location and enjoy games on the cloud. In time, we expect Sony to deliver full Cloud Streaming support to their Portal handheld, making the device a lot more useful for travellers.
