The LEGO Game Boy is set to be a Christmas HIT!

Nintendo’s Game Boy now has a near 1:1 LEGO replica, and it will be available before Christmas

LEGO and Nintendo have teamed up to create a near 1:1 replica of Nintendo’s classic Game Boy handheld. This 421-piece kit is releasing on October 1st, and arrives with two game cartridges and display stands, making this the perfect display piece for nostalgic gamers.

The kit is highly detailed, featuring brick-built cartridges for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening or Super Mario Land. It also has pressable buttons, and volume/contrast dials. Users even have various lenticular screen options to customise the system.

A neat display piece

At £54.99, this LEGO replica costs as much as a used Game Boy console. That said, the joy of Lego is in the building. This is a neat display piece and is certainly cheaper than a pristine Game Boy system.

Below is what Lego has to say about its new Game Boy display piece.

  • LEGO model building kit for adults – Inspire memories of classic video games with this near 1:1 scale replica model of the original Game Boy handheld game system from Nintendo
  • Authentic details – Recreate the +Control Pad, A and B Buttons, SELECT and START, the contrast adjustment and volume dial and the Game Pak slot, and display your brick-built Game Boy on the stand
  • A joyful build – The set offers an immersive activity for experienced LEGO builders and includes step-by-step instructions so Game Boy fans who are LEGO newcomers can also enjoy the challenge
  • Customise your display – Includes interchangeable, brick-built The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening or Super Mario Land Game Boy Game Paks and lenticular screens, plus a Nintendo start screen
  • Nostalgic Nintendo-themed gift for video game lovers – Treat yourself or give this exciting adults’ LEGO building set to gamers who are fans of Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda
  • 3D building instructions – Enjoy every step of your build with the LEGO Builder app; you can zoom and rotate your model in 3D, track your progress and save all your sets in one place
  • Dimensions – The buildable LEGO Nintendo system is a 421-piece set. It measures over 14 cm (5.5 in.) high, 9 cm (3.5 in.) wide and 3 cm (1 in.) deep. It has no light, sound or digital play functions

No, this is not a functional Game Boy, don’t let the screen printing fool you

Gamers should note that this is a buildable display piece, not a LEGO-themed emulation device. I am sure that some modders will try to turn this kit into a functional system. Regardless, LEGO has designed this kit to be a fun display piece, not a functional gaming device. The screen may look real at first glance, but it is printed plastic. Yes, I know people who thought that this was a LEGO-built emulation device…
