AMD delivers FSR 4.1.1 and Ray Regeneration 1.2.0 with its FSR SDK 2.3

AMD boosts FSR 4.1 compatibility and Ray Regeneration quality with its FSR SDK 2.3

AMD has released its FSR SDK 2.3 update on GitHub, giving game developers access to the company’s latest FSR technologies, including FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2 and FSR Upscaling 4.1.1.

With this new SDK, game developers can now integrate the latest AMD FSR technologies directly into their games. This eliminates the need for games to use AMD’s “FSR Upgrade” driver feature to utilise AMD’s newest FSR versions. It also allows developers to better utilise the newest FSR “Redstone” technologies.

FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 – FSR 4.1 with RX 7000 series support

AMD’s FSR SDK 2.3 now supports FSR Upscaling 4.1.1. This delivers FSR Upscaling 4.1 to AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series (RDNA 3) graphics cards. This is the first version of AMD’s FSR 4 technology that isn’t exclusive to AMD’s RDNA 4 (RX 9000 series) graphics cards. With this release, more Radeon GPUs support ML-powered upscaling.

In the future, AMD plans further updates to FSR 4 to support RDNA 3 (and likely RDNA 3.5) GPUs with a more lightweight model, as well as older RDNA 2 series GPUs.

FSR Ray Regeneration 1.2

AMD’s FSR Ray Regeneration is a denoising technology that increases the fidelity of ray-tracing effects by using a “Neural Network Denoiser”. This delivers clearer, more accurate ray-tracing results without relying on additional ray casts. This enables more performant ray tracing and path tracing.

With Ray Reconstruction 1.2, AMD has stated that it has made “quality improvements” to its technology. It also includes optional ambient and specular occlusion denoising features.

Ray Regeneration 1.2 features significant API changes, with a long list of “API breaking additions”. Hopefully, this update makes FSR Ray Regeneration more useful to developers. Right now, FSR Ray Regeneration is limited to a small number of games. To our knowledge, only Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Crimson Desert support FSR Ray Regeneration.

Below, we can see how FSR Ray Regeneration affects the visuals in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. With “Redstone” Ray Regeneration, we get clearer, ray-traced reflections with less visible noise.

Overall, AMD’s FSR SDK 2.3.0 version is a solid upgrade for developers. Direct FSR 4 Upscaling game integrations for RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 GPUs is an excellent add-on. AMD’s updated FSR Ray Regeneration is also a welcome update. Hopefully, this change will lead to broader FSR Ray Regeneration adoption in games.
