Company of Heroes is getting a 64-bit Definitive Edition PC upgrade

Relic Entertainment is celebrating Company of Heroes’ 20th Anniversary in style

Relic Entertainment has unveiled Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition, a new version of the 2006 RTS classic. With this new version, Relic is delivering PC gamers an upgraded experience while maintaining 20 years of mod support. In other words, they plan on delivering the same upgrades as Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War’s Definitive Edition.

This new version will include Company of Heroes’ base game content, and its Opposing Front and Tales of Valour expansions. The game has been upgraded to 64-bit to better support modern PCs, and to enable more advanced mods. Graphically, the game is receiving upgraded unit and environment textures alongside improved lighting and shadows. While this won’t make Company of Heroes look like a new game, it will make it look much less dated.

Relic is also adding several quality-of-life improvements to Company of Heroes. These include vehicle reversing, automatic reinforcement generation options, and an enhanced enemy AI. This new AI should make the game more dynamic and challenging, especially when combined with the game’s new “Ruthless” AI difficulty. HUD and screen layouts have also been adjusted for modern widescreen displays, giving Company of Heroes proper widescreen and ultrawide support. The game will also get modernised controls, including gridkey support and custom hotkey options.

If this is anything like Dawn of War: Definitive Edition, this is going to be an awesome package. This new version not only respects the original, but creates a stronger foundation for future mod support and other fan-made content.

At this time, Relic has not unveiled the release date or price of Company of Heroes: Definitive Edition. We expect to learn more later this year.
