Both Bethesda and Nvidia are teasing a DOOM Eternal announcement as part of the latter’s Computex 2021 keynote, suggesting that Nvidia’s RTX technologies will be coming to DOOM Eternal.

Back in 2019, id Software’s Marty Stratton stated that PC gamers can “absolutely look forward to DOOM Eternal and id Tech 7 supporting ray tracing“. Later, Stratton backtracked on this comment, confirming that DOOM Eternal will not feature ray tracing, as id Software narrowed its focus on delivering DOOM Eternal on all platforms with stable performance.

Now, it looks like id Software is finally adding ray tracing to DOOM Eternal, with both Nvidia and Bethesda teasing DOOM Eternal announcements at Computex 2021. We believe that Ray Tracing and DLSS 2.0 are coming to DOOM Eternal, two addons that will make the game’s performance and visuals to the next level.

At this time, it is unknown how id software will utilise ray tracing within DOOM Eternal, though we are likely to hear more at this evening’s Nvidia Computex Keynote. Unlike most other games with Ray Tracing, DOOM Eternal is built using the Vulkan API on PC, which means that the game will not be using Microsoft’s DXR ray tracing API. How this will impact DOOM Eternal’s ray tracing remains to be seen.
