Modders fix Monster Hunter Wilds’ memory woes with texture decompression
Monster Hunter Wilds’ PC version has problems. To start, the game’s visuals do not justify its high hardware requirements. To make matters worse, the game runs incredibly poorly on systems with 8GB GPUs, and now we know why. Thanks to a new texture decompression mod, PC gamers have fixed one of Monster Hunter Wilds’ biggest problems.
Digital Foundry have released a new video detailing this mod, highlighting how using uncompressed textures can eliminate Monster Hunter Wilds’ performance issues on 8GB GPUs. Better still, the mod allows 8GB GPU users to run the game with high texture settings. This allows 8GB GPU users to run the game with more stable performance and better visuals than before. What’s the catch? The catch is that texture decompression makes Monster Hunter Wilds’ storage requirements larger. Without the mod, textures take up 24GB of SSD space. When the mod is installed, textures will take up 41GB of space. Furthermore, these uncompressed textures will mean that more PCIe and SSD bandwidth are used when playing Monster Hunter Wilds.

Capcom should use this mod’s findings to improve Monster Hunter Wilds
Clearly, Monster Hunter Wilds’ GPU-based texture decompression system is causing performance issues. For gamers with 8GB GPUs, the game is almost unplayable when using the game’s high texture settings. Capcom should add a decompressed texture option to this game as an optional download. This would remove decompression-related hitches and framerate issues from the game. That would go a long way towards fixing this game’s longstanding performance issues.
