Nvidia DLSS 3.5 launches with Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update

DLSS 3.5 performance

Nvidia RTX users can now see DLSS 3.5 in action with Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update

Nvidia revealed DLSS 3.5 at Gamescom 2023, adding a new technique called Ray Reconstruction to the company’s family of AI based game enhancement technologies. Starting now, PC gamers can now see DLSS 3.5 in action with Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update, which launched earlier today. Patch notes for Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update are available here.

DLSS Ray Reconstruction is a technology that focuses on delivering enhanced visuals on PC, not higher framerates. In this regard, DLSS 3.5 is different to prior versions of DLSS, which focused on delivering higher framerates on supported hardware. Unlike DLSS 3’s Frame Generation technology, DLSS 3.5’s Ray Reconstruction technique is not exclusive to Nvidia’s newest GPUs. DLSS Ray Reconstruction works on all RTX graphics cards, even Nvidia’s original RTX 20 series GPU models.

Traditionally, games with ray tracing used hand crafted denoising techniques to get stable images when using ray tracing effects. With DLSS 3.5, Nvidia uses their Ray Reconstruction technology to deliver higher quality results than traditional techniques. Using an AI-powered Neural renderer, Nvidia’s technology can more intelligently deal with ray tracing data. By using this data more intelligently, Nvidia can deliver more accurate ray tracing effects. This can result in higher quality reflections, shadows, and global illumination. If ray tracing is used, Nvidia’s ray reconstruction tech can help make it look better.

Does DLSS 3.5 deliver performance benefits?

With DLSS RR, Nvidia can deliver enhanced ray tracing results by using ray tracing data in a more clever way. This allows RTX graphics cards to deliver higher quality results than traditional denoising techniques. When combined with DLSS super resolution, this can result in much higher quality results, as more high frequency data is conserved for DLSS Super Resolution to utilise. as we have mentioned before, DLSS ray reconstruction focuses on image quality, not performance.

With image quality being the primary focus of Nvidia’s ray reconstruction tech, it can deliver a notable performance boost in some games. This is because DLSS RR can replace multiple hand-tuned denoising techniques. This gives DLSS RR a lower overall performance overhead in some games.

This difference in performance overhead will vary on a game-by-game basis. In some games it will deliver higher levels of image quality at a small performance cost. In other games we will see higher levels of image quality and a notable performance boost.

Nvidia’s DLSS family now includes DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction. These effects arrived with DLSS 2.0, DLSS 3.0, and DLSS 3.5 respectively. Later this year, more games will launch with DLSS 3.5 support, including Remedy’s Alan Wake 2. An DLSS 3.5 update for Portal with RTX is also in the works.
