See Half-Life 2 RTX in its fully path-traced glory

Nvidia showcases Half-Life 2 RTX at CES 2024

At CES 2024, following their RTX 40 SUPER series GPU reveal, Nvidia has showcased the benefits of their RTX technology with Half-Life 2 RTX, an upcoming RTX Remix from Orbifold Studios.

Orbifold Studio is a merger of four of Half-life 2’s top modding teams. These teams created Half-Life 2: VR, Half-Life 2: Remade Assets, Project 17, and Raising the Bar: Redux. This team are now working with Nvidia to create an RTX Remix of Half-Life 2, complete with new assets, more detail, Physically Based Rendering (PBR), and full ray tracing.

As an Nvidia RTX Remix, this version of Half-Life 2 will feature Nvidia’s DLSS 3.5, Nvidia Reflex, and RTX IO technologies. With DLSS 3.5, the game will support DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, DLAA, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction. This will make this fully path traced version of Half-Life 2 playable on today’s GeForce GPUs.

Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project is being developed by four of Half-Life 2′s top mod teams, now working together under the banner of Orbifold Studios. Using the latest version of RTX Remix, the modders are rebuilding materials with PBR properties, adding extra geometric detail via Valve’s Hammer editor, and leveraging NVIDIA technologies including full ray tracing, DLSS 3.5, Reflex, and RTX IO to deliver a fantastic experience for GeForce RTX gamers.

Half-Life 2’s one of the most highly rated PC games of all time. This community remaster of Valve’s FPS classic will introduce the game to a whole new generation of players.

At CES, Nvidia showcased how Orbifold Studios have improved Half-Life 2’s visuals. This includes a 30x increase in geometric detail for the game’s zombies. The team have also used Valve’s Hammer editor to rebuild the game’s explosions and particle effects to meet modern standards. On average, world textures have around 8x as much detail as before. Additionally these textures are augmented with improvements like Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) and PBR.

With this mod/remix, Half-Life 2 will be transformed into a game with modern AAA visuals on PC. More information about Half-Life 2 RTX is available on the project’s website.
