Take-Two “pause” Borderlands 4 development for Switch 2

Borderlands 4 may never arrive on Nintendo’s Switch 2

Borderlands 4 was originally due to launch on Switch 2 on October 3rd, with Gearbox confirming a last-minute delay one week before its planned launch. Now, four months later, Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, has confirmed that they have chosen to “pause development” of the game’s Switch 2 version.

Take-Two claims that its focus is now on “delivering quality post-launch content” and “ongoing improvements to optimise the game.” These optimisations may be what ultimately makes the game’s Switch 2 version possible. Remember, the game is not cancelled on Switch 2, just paused.

Borderlands 4 released with performance issues on PC and consoles. If you’ve played the game or read our PC performance review, you know how demanding it is. On consoles, the game is known for having performance issues at launch, especially during long play sessions. While game updates have improved the game’s performance, it’s still a demanding title. Perhaps the game is too demanding for Nintendo’s Switch 2 hardware, at least in its current state.

We made the difficult decision to pause development on that SKU. Our focus continues to be delivering quality post-launch content for players on the ongoing improvements to optimize the game. We’re continuing to collaborate closely with our friends at Nintendo,

We have ‘PGA Tour 2K25’ coming out and ‘WWE 2K26’ [for Switch 2], and we’re incredibly excited about bringing more of our titles to that platform in the future.

Variety

For now, the future of Borderlands 4 on Switch remains uncertain. If Gearbox can deliver enough cross-platform optimisations to Borderlands 4, perhaps the game will become viable on Switch 2. If not, the game may never release on Nintendo’s newest console.
