Windows 10 will soon “reserve” 7GB of storage for future updates

Right now, Windows Insiders are already able to test the features of Microsoft’s next major update, which amongst other things will reserve system storage for future updates and temporary files and system caches. This update is designed to make the Windows Update process more seamless, as most OS updates should be able to fit within this reserved storage volume. 

Right now, Microsoft says that this reserved storage volume will be around 7GB, though language packs and other optional features make it possible that Windows 10’s reserved space will be larger for some users.  

While this update will make the Windows update process a little easier for some users, the very idea of storage being locked away from users will no doubt concern some users, especially those who use 60/120GB SSDs or portable systems with 32GB of eMMC memory. 7GB is a lot of space for users of small storage volumes. 

Microsoft has confirmed that “reserved storage cannot be removed from the OS”, though it can be reduced by removing optional features and reducing the number of installed languages on your system.
