Naturally as we move towards benchmarks that involve the GPU more, you’re lessening the impact of the processor. Nonetheless we still feel that these tests are a useful way to investigate performance and the heavy ray-tracing in Speed Way is perfect. We want someone to make this into an actual game.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D Conclusion

When we were collating our test data to produce our graphs, we had a slight chuckle. AMDs X3D technology has generally been a success, especially if you mainly use your PC for gaming. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D not only improves gaming performance to the level where it topped our gaming graphs almost without exception, but the regular performance results were good too.

Naturally if you wish to use your rig primarily for rendering or video encoding, then other AMD Ryzen processors will give you better performance or the same performance at a more affordable price point. Additionally we were chiefly concerned with how little benefit the AMD PBO technology gave. All our Cinebench tests hardly noticed we’d switched it on. All rather strange. That’s not to say the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is bad in these applications, just they are not it’s forte.

What clearly is its strong point is exactly what you would think. When we tested it with the Radeon RX 7800 XT in the PCSpecialist rig it made a huge step forward in comparison to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Here, pushing polygons at a Nvidia RTX 4090, the performance gains were similarly huge. Let’s give you an example of how AMD is moving the bar ever forwards. In Final Fantasy XIV, the Ryzen 5800X3D scored 196 FPS average, the Ryzen 7800X3D a mighty 218 FPS average, whilst the Ryzen 7 9800X3D manages a whopping 242. 50 FPS better in two generations.

Whether this is for you depends upon your use. If you largely render video or 3D things and occasionally game, the Ryzen 9 9900X has better performance at a similar price. However, if you game, and if you really want to squeeze all you can from your graphics card, there is little to touch the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. It strengthens AMDs stranglehold on the CPU sales market currently and wins our OC3D Performance Award.
