ASUS Z270G Strix Review

Conclusion

Sometimes you get a product that is summed up pretty easily and the ASUS Strix Z270G is one such item.

To some degree this can be explained by the fact it’s the fourth model in the excellent ASUS Strix range that we’ve reviewed here at the OC3D underground bunker, and it has all the hallmarks that we’ve found so far. You’ve got one of the best BIOS options around, with an easy to use interface hiding powerful features, that make it just as simple to change which drive you boot from as it is to adjust the timings of your DDR4. In fact it’s almost a shame that you’ll spend so little time in the BIOS, because like all the models in the Strix range whether you’re looking at the tiny Z270I, or the top end Z270E, you can quickly reach the best settings for your hardware configuration. The days of spending a week fine tuning have long been consigned to history.

It isn’t just a case of a product that puts up numbers which look good in CPUz screenshots though, as the performance we saw throughout our testing was at the very least as good as we would hope to find from a 5 GHz Core i7-7700K and quite often better than you might foretell. Sure it never really topped any of our graphs but it was relentlessly consistent and, despite the fact that smaller form factor motherboards aren’t limited in their performance any more, there is still something a little surprising about a teensy motherboard in a big case pumping out monster scores.

All motherboards are so well rounded these days that the idea of having one specific to a certain task is old-fashioned, but we have to mention how well the Z270G Strix performed in the 3D tests. 3rd place in 3D Mark Fire Strike, 4th in VR Mark and Time Spy and back up to 3rd in our Gaming benchmarks. There is no denying it is a fine performer for those of you who focus mainly upon gaming, and these 3D results are made all the more impressive by the fact the ASUS ROG Apex was so far ahead of the Z270 competition that it is almost in a different category. So really this mATX board is on the podium in every test.

Combine all this performance and ease of use with the build quality, reliability and AURA trimmings that we always expect from ASUS and it is clear that the Z270G Strix is the perfect choice for anyone who requires a smaller form factor without compromise.
