Introduction
We reviewed the be quiet! Dark and Light Mount keyboard a year ago, and found them to be excellent. be quiet! came out of the gate with a keyboard that had loads of useful features, whilst also living up to their name by being incredibly quiet in use.
It might seem like a small thing, quietness in a keyboard. Have you ever watched a streamer with a clacky keyboard? Or been in an office with one? They’re fantastically annoying. Great if you love the tactile nature of typing with one, but any noise we choose to make is okay. It’s the noises we have no choice about that suck. My music, lovely. My neighbours music, even if it is a band I enjoy, hateful. So it is with keyboards.
be quiet! very much lived up to their name with their first iteration of their mechanical orange switches. With lubrication and a very carefully designed setup they were quieter than Reds and some optical ones we’ve used. If not totally noiseless, they still fit into the “genuinely tranquil” category. That absolute quest for quiet did mean that, in the long term, and far longer than we have to test, a couple of issues appeared with quality. Any time you design something unlike anything else, it takes the manufacturer a moment to get up to speed. Early designs did occasionally have a switch or two that failed. Easy to replace, but still sub-optimal.
Light Mount TKL
With the new V2 switches over a year of testing both in the field and the lab has eliminated any weak points. The mass-market world isn’t about having one thing hand-crafted, it’s being able to produce things in huge quantities, consistently, forever. By entering an unfamiliar market with a new design and being honest enough to accept areas of improvement speaks to be quiet! as a company. We know many huge conglomerates that have tried something once and quit the second it wasn’t a monster success. Anyone for a McDonald’s Arch Deluxe?
So whilst we wait for a V2 equipped Dark Mount to appear in the OC3D offices, let’s look at the svelte TKL version of the be quiet! Light Mount. Compact with an aluminium top plate and quality, RGB backed, keycaps, it ticks all the boxes one expects from a modern keyboard.
