MSI MPG X870E Carbon Preview

Introduction

The MSI Carbon range has always been a big seller. Firstly in earliest days the name was part of the fad for carbon fibre, then it became a true workhorse. Indeed MSI have kept the Carbon in the range long since we’ve all got used to Carbon Fibre as a material available to the public. The newest addition to the range also has the latest AMD chipset in place. Welcome to the OC3D preview of the MSI X870E Carbon WiFi.

Like all of the X870E motherboards we’ve seen so far – many of them still to appear in previews – it’s clear that AMD have kept adding to their already successful AM5 setup. The Ryzen 9000 series of CPUs are spectacular across the range. We’ve reviewed a lot of them and found them to be superb. You can check out the 9600X and 9700X or the flagship Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X if you wish. What AMD have always done well is reward you for buying into their ecosystem.

The AM3 range lasted from 2009 to 2016 for goodness sake, and even the early processors for that worked in AM2 systems. AM4 took over in 2016 and lasted until AM5 appeared two years ago. Clearly if you buy a good AMD motherboard you don’t need to keep buying them to keep up with the latest in processors. Perhaps, then, it’s worth investing in a very good one? If it’s going to last you for 5 or more years, having a cutting edge one makes perfect sense.

Today’s Preview

Enter the MSI X870E Carbon WiFi. It boasts two PCIe 5.0 slots, 2 Gen 5 M.2 slots – as well as two Gen 4 ones – and more USB ports than you could realistically fill. Certainly if you like high bandwidth hardware you could do a lot worse. But let’s not tell you in dry text and even drier tables when we could show you it in the flesh. Especially as MSI have really gone to town on the design details. Onwards.
