ASUS ROG RTX 5090 Matrix Platinum Review

Conclusion

The Matrix name has been famous for as long as OC3D has existed. With good reason. In a square world, ASUS have dared to turn to corners.

In fact it speaks volumes that ASUS have managed to create a card with bucks the aesthetic trends and yet the looks aren’t the most interesting bit. Obviously there are the two different ways of powering it. Splitting power between either the regular 12VHPWR or a BTF approach means you can buy this and be futureproofed. Similarly the design is such that whichever you use, the other isn’t sticking out. Go BTF and the main input is covered up – see image at the top of each page. Or go 2×6 power and you’re not stuck with the BTF connector digging into your motherboard. Whichever you use the Matrix can pull 800W from it, for peak performance.

Obviously you need good cooling for high speed, high power graphics cards. The quad-fan design of the Matrix shifts an awful lot of air, whilst beneath that swish cover you get a copper vapor chamber and liquid metal thermal compound for maximum thermal transfer. If you want to disassemble the card and try your liquid nitrogen skills out then VRAM freeze recovery ensures you’re not waiting around for things to warm up again between runs.

At this point performance is almost secondary. It’s an RTX 5090. Still the fastest card on Earth. Take one of those and give it all of the above, and performance is exceptional. It beats the ASUS Astral Liquid-Cooled. On air! Nuff said.

Whilst the price limits the ASUS ROG RTX 5090 Matrix Platinum to the very wealthiest, it’s good to know what is possible. And if you find yourself in that bracket, or fancy selling your grandmother, then the rewards are phenomenal.

We’ll be revisiting this card when we finally get hold of the recommended ROG Thor PSU.
