DOOM PC Performance Review

4K Testing with AMD R9 Fury X and Nvidia GTX 980Ti

One thing to note before we start is that DOOM runs on a different version of the Khronos Group’s OpenGL API, with AMD GPUs running on OpenGL version 4.3 and Nvidia running on the newer version 4.3. This means that comparing AMD and Nvidia GPUs in this game isn’t a true apples-to-apples comparison

The game will be patched to support the new Khronos Group’s new Vulkan API, so hopefully we will be able to give this game a truer comparison when that version of the game releases.

Going up to 4K we can see AMD actually taking the performance lead from Nvidia at low, medium and high settings, with Nvidia taking the performance crown at Ultra. Neither of the two GPUs was able to achieve a constant 60+ FPS at 4K, meaning that 4K gamers will need to turn down the games resolution scale option to play the game with a 60+ FPS framerate.

DOOM is very playable at low settings on these GPUs, but when huge battles rage on some of the performance dips can be very noticeable, which is primarily due to the fast paced movement and combat in this game.
