Up Close

It is amazing that the basic recipe of two fans on a shroud over a thick heatsink can have so many detail variations and yet be so recognisable. It’s a credit to the design team of the various card partners that they can make their product unique despite having such a limited canvas. Of course the centre stickers on the fans and the backplate ones help, but even without these we think most people could spot that this is a Twin Frozr cooler. Speaking of the backplate it’s a lovely brushed finish that is sure to catch the lighting of your system beautifully.

The heatsink is heavy on the fin count and with some thick heat pipes to help transfer the thermals from the GPU to the outside world. The shroud is thin enough to give plenty of space for heat dissipation whilst also sturdy enough to ensure the fans don’t vibrate and rattle when they’re under loading.

From every angle the MSI Gaming Z looks an attractive card, angular where it needs to be but always with more of an eye on the substance of the cooler than mere style.

At the business end we have a single 8pin PCI-E power input, whilst outputs are three DisplayPorts and a single HDMI. No USB, no DVI. Something to bear in mind if the Gaming Z proves worthy of adding to your wishlist.
