MSI RTX 5080 Expert Review

Conclusion

What card is right for you is always a complicated question. The first thought always has to fall to budget. Yes you might want a RTX 5090, but for most of us that’s a pipe dream. What really matters is how much you have to spend. Assuming you’re not living on beans on toast and Ramen, the next consideration is use. Do you game hardcore? When you game are you wanting to play all the latest, headline grabbing numbers? Perhaps you play hundreds of hours but just Fortnite and Terraria.

Assuming you have a big, but not infinite budget, and assuming you like to try all the games that get added to Game Pass or appear in a Steam sale, then the RTX 5080 is the perfect choice. Like a fast German saloon being all the car you actually need, the RTX 5080 is all the graphics card you need. The RTX 5070 Ti will need a few tweaks in the most demanding games. An RTX 5090 is almost overkill unless you’re extremely wealthy or have an 8K monitor. The RTX 5080 is the enthusiast sweet spot.

What you then need is a card which maximises the performance of Nvidia’s GB203 GPU. One that will blend into any design scheme. Maybe one that can be customised if you’re feeling arty. The MSI RTX 5080 Expert ticks all those boxes. The cooler is magnificent. Even during our DLSS4 testing – Alan Wake II etc – it didn’t pass 71°C. That’s darn cool for a card of this performance. Additionally we might have seen an average clock speed which fit in the mid-pack of our RTX 5080 cards, but actually the performance was better than that. Throughout our testing it was in the upper echelons of available cards.

Where we think it absolutely takes home the prize though is the design. The front might have been rejigged – perhaps on the insistence of Mercedes lawyers, perhaps not – but it’s still gorgeous. Best of all that smooth, minimalist design works in any rig. Neutral colours and a lack of a light show help it blend in. Lastly it’s really easy to take apart. Should you want to respray it to match your colour choice, there are few cards easier to do that to than this.

Whether in stock ‘out of the box’ trim, or as the canvas upon which to show off your artistic skills, the MSI RTX 5080 Expert is everything you would hope to see from a graphics card. Cool, quiet, sledgehammer performance. Enough to win it our OC3D Enthusiast Award.
