Rise of the Tomb Raider PC performance retested with new AMD drivers

Rise of the Tomb Raider AMD Driver Retest

Conclusion

As I said at the very beginning GPU drivers are very important, with the newest driver iterations from AMD and Nvidia not just fixing bugs and issues, but providing us with some great boosts to in the performance of modern games.

Rise of the Tomb Raider performed very well on both AMD and Nvidia at launch, but with this new driver AMD has gained an edge in the performance battle, with the Fury X winning in 4K performance against the GTX 980Ti and the R9 380 beating the GTX 960 in 1080p performance.

At 1440p things get a little bit more complex, with the GTX 980Ti and the R9 Fury X performing almost identically, to a point where I would say that if I tested both systems blind I would not be able to tell the difference between the two GPUs.

Both HBAO+ and PureHair performance has been improved by this driver, now making the performance impact of these effects almost identical on both GPU platforms, truly leveling the playing field between AMD and Nvidia.

Hopefully AMD can continue to deliver Game specific drivers and start to get closer the games launch in the future, as I would really like to see new drivers ready from both sides before the launch of big games in the future.
