Rise of the Tomb Raider PC performance retested with new AMD drivers

Rise of the Tomb Raider AMD Driver Retest

Rise of the Tomb Raider AMD Driver Retest

Drivers are a very important aspect when it comes to GPUs, more so than pretty much any other component in your systems. Every game is different and they react to different GPUs in different ways, requiring the driver teams at both AMD and Nvidia to work very hard in order to make sure that every game performs a well as possible on their own hardware.

Game specific driver releases have became common, especially for AAA games, so when a driver like this releases performance increases are expected and practically makes any GPU performance data that was made before the release useless.

Today we will be retesting Rose of the Tomb Raider using AMD’s new 16.1.1 Hotfix driver for Rise of the Tomb Raider, a driver that brings both crossfire profiles and game specific optimizations to Rise of the Tomb Raider. Let’s see how well it performs.

Drivers

For this game we will be using the newest drivers that were available when the game released, which is Nvidia’s Game Ready Geforce 361.75 WQHL driver and AMD’s 16.1.1 Hotfix driver for Rise of the Tomb Raider, both of which became available to the public in the last week.

Test Setup

We will be testing this game on our dedicated GPU test rig using the current flagship GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia. Both GPUs will be the reference design and will be ran at stock settings.

To represent AMD and Nvidia’s Mid range GPU offerings we have decided to use the AMD R9 380 and the Nvidia GTX 960. Both of these GPUs will be the ASUS Strix models

Both of these GPUs offer very similar performance in most scenarios and come in at very similar pricepoints, so it will be very interesting to see which GPU will come out on top.
