Star Wars: Battlefront – AMD VS Nvidia Performance Review
Conclusion
Star Wars Battlefront is no doubt one of the biggest shooters of 2015, having already become the most popular open beta in history for both the PS4 and the Xbox one and easily being the highlight of EA’s recent release schedule.
In terms of pure performance Star Wars Battlefront is a highly impressive title, doing a great job of scaling to higher and lower end hardware while not suffering from visuals that look a few years out of date like Fallout 4. As a competitive multiplayer title it is great to know that most players will be able to easily play the game at 60FPS or higher at their desired resolution.
The graphical options menu is likely one of the most in depth one that I have seen this year, including many of the features that most developers simply forget about like colourblind options and an FOV slider. It is also great to see a game this year which didn’t have a 60FPS framerate cap, unlike Fallout 4 and Metal Gear Solid V before it, 144Hz gamers can rejoice knowing that their monitors can be used to their fullest potential.
When changing the games setting the largest impact on both performance and visual fidelity is between the low and medium presets, where features like environmental shadows and dust/fog come into affect. One of the other things that the presets change noticeably is how far the draw distance is for detailed models, where draw in is very apparent at the lower settings, especially in the 3rd person view.
When looking at the performance of AMD’s R9 Fury X and Nvidia’s GTX 980Ti it is very clear that there is very little between the two GPUs, with the GTX 980Ti coming out on top at 1080p and the R9 Fury X coming out on top at 4K. It is great to have a game which performs so well on both AMD and Nvidia’s flagship gaming GPUs, being a breath of fresh air after the controversies which usually surround a big game release like this.
When at it’s higher settings this game is beautiful, with high resolution textures, models and expertly crafted Heroes and Villains, which to me makes it such a shame that DICE were not able to create a storied campaign for this game. The game plays very well and I have had a lot of fun during my time playing the game, but right now I do not know if the appeal will last longer than a few months, or how long it takes everyone to get past the upcoming Star Wars movie.
