Rise of the Tomb Raider update – Has AMD Performance Ryzen?

Rise of the Tomb Raider update - AMD Performance Ryzen?

Conclusion

When Ryzen launched gamers across the world were wondering how AMD’s latest CPU architecture would perform, hoping that AMD would be able to match Intel’s gaming performance and give PC gamers a more affordable way to create a high-performance gaming system.

Sadly when the results came in many were disappointed, with many coming to the defence of AMD stating that it was a lack of optimisation that prevented AMD from reaching more lofty performance heights. After all, most modern games were developed for Intel CPUs, when Zen was only a mere codename.

Over the past few months, several games have had Ryzen related patches, from DOTA 2 to Total War Warhammer and Ashes of the Singularity Escalation. Now Rise of the Tomb Raider can be added to the Ryzen optimised games list, with the game now offering a significant performance boost when compared to the game’s previous version.

In our 1080p gaming results, our stock Ryzen 7 1700X was able to achieve an average framerate that was 14% higher, which means much higher minimum framerates.

Just like with other Ryzen performance patches we can see here that a lot of extra system performance can be achieved by focusing some development time on architecture specific CPU optimisations, which will become increasingly important as more gamers purchase Ryzen CPUs or systems.

AMD’s PR team has already spoken to us about Ryzen game optimisation, stating that they are working on placing Ryzen based systems into the hands of more game developers, with hopes to deliver over 1000 systems by the end of 2017. This should hopefully bring Ryzen optimisations to upcoming AAA PC releases, and help developers support increased core/thread counts moving forward.

With Rise of the Tomb Raider’s latest title update, Square Enix has delivered exactly what was promised, increased game performance in CPU limited tasks, highlighting the importance of CPU optimisation in future game releases. Let’s hope that more games will be developed with Ryzen in mind moving forward, and take advantage of systems with increased core counts.
