Battery Life and Temperatures

We’ve often mentioned that getting a laptop super thin requires compromises, and as well as the heat we’ll see on the graph below this one, the thinness of the battery severely limits the battery life to the point that it wont even game for an hour.

The results on the previous page are probably best explained by this graph. nVidia GPUs always overclock to their thermal limits, so the HP could thrash the heck out of its GTX 1070 whilst the thinness of the Zephyrus limits the potential of the card, leading it to not maximise the capabilities of a GTX 1080 in the way that we’d like to see. The place where the keyboard usually is got so hot we were scared to touch it, demonstrating how much heat is soaking into the chassis rather than being exhausted through the small gap at the back. The Max-Q design does keep the GTX 1080 temperatures in check, it just doesn’t let the GPU Boost really stretch its legs.
