AMD reveals the capabilities of their AM4 motherboards

At CES 2017 AMD has revealed their AM4 series of motherboards, these motherboards will be compatible with AMD’s upcoming Ryzen CPUs and Bristol Ridge APUs and will make up AMD’s 2017 product lineup.

AMD has confirmed that all AM4 CPUs will be overclockable, with every CPU containing an unlocked multiplier. This is in contrast to Intel who only allows overclocking on select K-series SKUs, all of which command a hefty price premium. 

AMD’s AM4 motherboard lineup will come with five different chipset versions, three of which are capable of overclocking and most of which contain native USB 3.1 Gen 2 support. 

Looking at these feature sets we can see that AMD’s AM4 platform scales from the low-end of the PC market to the high end, with the ability to offer overclocking compatibility with a range of different chipsets and feature sets. Unlike Intel, where overclocking limited to their Z/X-series chipsets, AMD allowing motherboard manufacturers to offer OC support with several different chipsets, allowing more affordable overclocking ready motherboards to be manufactured.   

It looks like AMD are aiming to make their AM4 series motherboards affordable while still offering a modern feature set, which should hopefully allow AMD to deliver a great price/performance ratio with Ryzen.
