Intel announces a $7 Billion investment into Foundry 42

 
Yesterday, Intel’s CEO, Brian Krazanich, announces that the company would be making a $7 Billion investment into Foundry 42, a new foundry which will be based in Arizona. This new foundry will specialise in 7nm manufacturing, which is set to replace Intel’s upcoming 10nm manufacturing node. 
 
This was announced in the US’ Oval Office, beside US President Donald Trump. This new fab is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs within the local area, with Intel employing 3,000 people directly. 
 
Originally, Fab 42 started construction back in 2011, with Intel stopping further development on the Foundry back in 2014 after the company failed to make any meaningful headway into the mobile SoC market. This foundry was originally cancelled because Intel did not require the extra manufacturing capacity that the new Fab would provide, making further work on the plant meaningless, at least until now.

Intel now needs new foundries to create their next generation 7nm processors, with Foundry 42 the obvious choice for the company since the CPU maker already has all required planning permission and a large portion of the work already completed in for the facility. 

While this new foundry will allow Intel to create 3,000 new jobs directly, it must be remembered that Intel has already cut over 12,000 jobs since April 2016, with a large portion of these jobs being in the US.

The reason behind Intel announcing this investment in the White House seems to be purely for the additional press coverage outside of the tech industry, with Intel stating that they are receiving no federal benefits from the Trump Administration for creating this new foundry inside the US.   

Intel’s reasoning behind creating this new foundry at the Foundry 42 site is simple as the company has already made investments in the area and has already received any relevant planning permissions to build a foundry on this site.
