ASUS’ Hyper M.2 X16 Gen 4 card pushes the limits of PCIe 4.0 storage

AMD’s TRX40 platform delivers one thing, it’s bandwidth. Yes, while TRX40 is also famed for its incredible core counts with Zen 2 Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series processors, it also packs more PCIe bandwidth than you could shake a stick at.

TRX40 offers users 72 total PCIe 4.0 lanes, granting users an insane amount of bandwidth to utilise, be it for graphics cards, storage devices or networking components. Even without PCIe 4.0 this lane count is impressive, and it allows users to do things that would otherwise be impossible.

At CES 2020 ASUS has revealed its Hyper M.2 X16 Gen 4 storage card, which offers users four PCIe 4.0 X4 M.2 slots which support SSD sizes of up to 22110. This card can be used to connect up to four PCIe 4.0 SSDs in a RAID 0 configuration, offering users 256 Gbps (32GB/s) of potential bandwidth.

If you plan to use AMD’s TRX40 platform to deliver insane storage speeds, this PCIe X16 to 4x M.2 solution could be the product for you. ASUS’ Hyper M.2 16x Gen 4 offers its users longer than average M.2 slots, a large heatsink to help prevent thermal throttling and an integrated fan (which can be disabled using a switch) to ensure that the device stays cool during extended read/write workloads.

ASUS plans to release its Hyper M.2 X16 in the near future of users of AMD’s PCIe 4.0 compliant Threadripper and EPYC processors. Pricing is expected to be the same as ASUS’ PCIe 3.0 compatible version.
