ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme Threadripper Preview

Introduction

It might have a name that implies a destructive haberdasher but the AMD Threadripper is the ultimate expression of the Zen architecture and CPUs that have put AMD back on the map in a big way.

Indeed the word big is one that perfectly encapsulates the whole Threadripper concept. The TR4 socket is the biggest we’ve ever seen. With 16 cores supporting threading for 32 logical processors the 1950X CPU itself can hardly be described as small either. The fact that AMD are supplying them with water-cooling by default implies that the thermals will be pretty big too.

All in all this seems like a product for which the word big was invented.

Now we can’t give away too much about the CPU today, but we can give you a quick rundown of the platform upon which we’re going to be testing it, the ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme.

Technical Specifications

As is often the case with extremely new hardware, or at the very least hardware we have to write about before the official release date, there aren’t any official documents we can refer to, or specification tables we can insert. So, like us, you’ll have to temporarily make do with peering at the back of the box to get a feel for what this new X399 chipset is capable of.
