PCSX2 now supports over 99.5% of PS2 games
PC Gamers can now play almost all PlayStation 2 games thanks to PCSX2
Emulation is a vital tool for game preservation, especially now that classic consoles like the PlayStation 2 are over 25 years old. Original hardware is becoming increasingly difficult to find, especially in fully working condition. This makes it challenging for gamers to play (or replay) many classic games. Now, PC gamers can play almost the entire library of the PlayStation 2 thanks to PCSX2, the PS2 emulator.
Today, over 99.5% of PlayStation 2 games are playable on the PCSX2. Discounting regional variants and versions of games, only four games aren’t rated as “Playable” or “Perfect” on PCSX2’s compatibility list. These are DRIV3R, Final Fantasy XI, Marvel Nemesis – Rise of the Imperfects, and World Series Baseball 2K3.
Given the popularity of Sony’s PlayStation 2 and its vast library, it is unsurprising that PCSX2 is a popular emulator. Even now, the emulator continues to receive frequent updates, further enhancing the game preservation tool.

Recent years have seen some major improvements arrive for PCSX2, beyond simple PS2 game compatibility updates. The emulator now supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. Furthermore, the emulator can play PS2 games at higher resolutions than the PS2 can, and supports high-resolution texture packs for some games. More recently, version 2.4.0 introduced stronger multiplayer capabilities, enabling two-player split-screen functionality to work correctly for many PS2 games.
PCSX2 is available to download for free as open-source software. However, the emulator needs a PS2 BIOS to run. If you own a PS2, this BIOS will be easy to acquire. Note that it is not legal to download a PS2 BIOS online. Like all modern emulators, PCSX2 isn’t a piracy tool; it is a game preservation tool. Users are expected to use their own PS2 BIOS and games with this emulator.
