Marathon will run at 5K on PS5 Pro – Bungie confirms

Expect ultra-clean visuals with Marathon on PlayStation 5 Pro

On the PlayStation Store, Sony has confirmed that Marathon, Bungie’s new Extraction Shooter, will deliver a console-first experience on PS5 Pro. When the game launches on March 5th, it will be the first game to run natively (internally) at 5K on the console and use PSSR to downsample to 4K.

Typically, PS5 Pro games use PSSR to upscale games to higher effective resolutions. With Marathon, this process is being reversed. That means that Marathon players should expect ultra-sharp visuals on Sony’s enhanced console.

Sony has also stated that Marathon will run at a “sharp, smooth 60 FPS”. So far, there has been no confirmation of a 120 FPS mode. Currently, the resolution of Sony’s standard PS5 is unknown.

PS5 Pro Enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) blends 5K internal rendering into a clean, stable 4K image so your Runner’s view stays sharp, even when the action gets hectic.

With Marathon, it looks like Bungie has targeted stable performance and an ultra-clean presentation. On PC, the game has remarkably low system requirements. Because of this, we are unsurprised by the game’s 5K support on PS5 Pro. Marathon’s PS5 performance is a good sign for PC gamers, as high-resolution support on PS5 will likely translate into strong PC performance. This is especially true for high-end PC users. If PS5 Pro can target 5K, high-end PCs should be able to handle 8K, or 4K at much higher framerates.
