The entire Jak and Daxter Trilogy is now natively playable on PC

The Jak and Daxter Trilogy are now natively playable on PC through OpenGOAL

As much as I’d love to see it, Jak and Daxter isn’t getting remastered or remade for modern systems. Sony isn’t bringing this classic game collection to PC. While Sony has closed the door on Jak and Daxter fans, the community has opened another. Through OpenGOAL, the original Jak and Daxter Trilogy has become playable on PC. This isn’t emulation; these are native PC versions that support mods, higher framerates, and higher resolutions. Jak is back!

OpenGOAL is to reverse-engineer Naughty Dog’s GOAL (Game Oriented Assembly Lisp) programming language. By uncovering GOAL’s secrets, the OpenGOAL team has used this language to decompile Naughty Dog’s main series Jak and Dexter games. This enables the team to create native ports of the series for PC, and then create modified content for the series.

Right now, all three mainline Jak and Daxter games are playable on PC. OpenGOAL can be used to decompile and recompile Jak and Daxter, Jak 2, and Jak 3. This makes all three games playable on PC. Users will need to supply their own ISO files to recompile these PS2 classics. These games are playable on Windows PCs, Linux, and Intel-based Macs.

Currently, only Jak and Daxter’s PC version is considered complete, with Jak 2 and Jak 3’s PC versions being considered “Beta”. That said, all three games are playable from start to finish on PC. Furthermore, all three games are playable at resolutions. While Jak 3 is currently limited to 60 FPS, the other two games can be played at even higher framerates on PC.

(Jak 3’s native PC version is now in beta!)

Is this legal?

Yes, using OpenGOAL to play Jak and Daxter on PC is legal. OpenGOAL requires users to utilise their own game ISO files to create playable PC versions of Jak and Daxter and Jak 2. This means that you need to own a copy of each game to make them playable on PC.

Using OpenGOAL, gamers decompile and recompile their own copies of Jak and Daxter for personal use. This is perfectly legal. It is this legal footing that has allowed PC ports of many classic games to be created in recent years, including Perfect Dark (N64)Super Mario 64, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Is Jak X: Combat Racing coming to PC through OpenGOAL?

Currently, all three mainline Jak and Daxter games are fully playable through OpenGOAL. Improvements for all three games will be land through future OpenGOAL updates. Currently, the OpenGOAL team are unsure if they will work on Jak X: Combat Racing. Jak X is a spin-off game, and fans do not consider it a true sequel to Jak 3. This makes the game less interesting to many gamers, though the OpenGOAL team may still choose to support it, eventually. After all, is OpenGOAL truly complete when the last GOAL game isn’t supported?

As for PSP’s Daxter and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, neither of these games are from Naughty Dog. Neither game uses the GOAL language, so they can’t be part of the OpenGOAL project. If you want to play Daxter on PC, you will need to emulate it. If you want to play Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, don’t. In my opinion, it isn’t worth playing.
