Thieves steal Nvidia-branded truck trailers to find 20 tons of sand
Nvidia-branded truck trailers were stolen in California, but no GPUs were inside
Thieves in California have pulled off what may be the most disappointing heist in history. Two Nvidia-branded trailers were stolen, and the thieves must have thought that they contained valuable GPUs or other AI equipment. When police found the trailers, they were filled with sand, around 20 tons of sand each.
The two trailers had PlusAI and Nvidia Logos, with both being used to test autonomous trucking technology. The contents didn’t matter, so they filled both with something relatively worthless: sand. After all, these trailers were for testing, not real-world deliveries. After discovering the trailers’ payload, the thieves quickly abandoned them.
While the PlusAI trucks that moved these trailers would have had valuable self-driving hardware inside, the trailers are nothing special. These trucks are safely warehoused overnight, but the trailers weren’t. The stolen trailers were discovered when an acquaintance contacted a PlusAI executive to say the trailers were near their workplace. So far, no arrests have been made, and both trucks still have their full payloads.

The trucks were filled with Silica, not Silicon
With Nvidia, the US’ most valuable company, and “AI” being plastered over the trailers, the thieves behind this heist must have thought that they were getting their hands on powerful (and valuable) AI hardware. Instead of silicon, the thieves got silica. Well, in all honesty, the sand used here probably wasn’t as pure or valuable as high-quality silica. They stole nothing of real value. After the event, the trailers needed to be returned and have their locks replaced.
This isn’t the first time thieves have targeted trucks carrying high-value hardware. Recent months have seen various instances of cargo thefts in the US, targeting server hardware, precious metals, and other valuable items. Last year, thieves targeted a truck carrying Nintendo’s newly released Switch 2 console. At least this time, the thieves stole nothing of value.
