PS5 Exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine booted on PC using an emulator
The death of PlayStation PC is pushing gamers towards PS5 emulation
Much to Sony’s annoyance, PlayStation 5 emulation has improved a lot over the past few months. Over the past month, Demon’s Souls has gone from being unplayable to 40-50 FPS framerates on PC, and Marvel’s Wolverine has become bootable. Sony’s newest PlayStation exclusive is now booting on the platform that Sony has abandoned.
With the death of PlayStation PC and the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 as a console exclusive, PC enthusiasts have several strong reasons to support PlayStation-to-PC emulation. Until recently, most PlayStation 5 exclusives were expected to arrive on PC sometime after launch. Now that Sony has abandoned PC, gamers are taking it upon themselves to bring Sony’s games to PC. The lack of a PC version of GTA 6 is also pushing gamers towards PS5 emulation.
While the game only reaches its opening menu, Marvel’s Wolverine is booting on PC. There are graphical glitches and poor performance, but this is much stronger emulation than is normal for a current-generation console. Yes, the game’s framerates are awful in this menu with an RTX 5090 and AMD Ryzen 7 7800X, but the fact it works at all is astounding. In time, Marvel’s Wolverine could become playable on PC, even if Sony doesn’t want it to.
As it stands, Marvel’s Wolverine is never coming to PC, at least officially. PlayStation gave PC gamers a taste of Sony’s first-party games, but decided to take that away. Now, gamers are working to bring PS5 games to PC on their own. With the power of AI-assisted coding tools and spite, PlayStation 5 emulation is developing much faster than expected. Sony brought this upon themselves.
Instead of maximising the reach of their games on PC, Sony has opted to deny PC gamers something that they have come to expect. Sony created an audience for PC games on PC, and then abandoned that audience; an audience that was already unwilling to buy a PlayStation console. Add Sony’s decision to abandon game discs, and it’s easy to see why interest in PlayStation emulation is growing. For the most part, this damage to Sony seems largely self-inflicted.
