Hands on with ASUS’ ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming Motherboard at Gamescom

ASUS has packed a lot of tech into their new X870E Strix motherboard

At Gamescom 2024, we have received an early look at the ASUS’ entire X870E/X870 family of AM5 motherboards. This includes their feature-packed ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming motherboard, which is a I/O monster.

Power-wise, this motherboard features two 8-pin EPS connections and a beefy 18+2+2 power stage system. The motherboard features four DDR5 DIMM slots, allowing it to support up to 192GB (4x48GB) of DDR5 memory.

Networking-wise, this motherboard features support for 5Gb ethernet, and WIFI 7 out of the box. Additionally, this motherboard features USB4 support, and five total M.2 SSD slots. Furthermore, this motherboards had 1 USB Type-C 20Gbps port and 10 USB 10Gbps ports (9x Type-A, 1x Type-C).

If you are into fast storage, you should know that this motherboard features three PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots. That will give users access to tonnes of fast storage, which is great news for content creators, and video editors.

NitroPath DRAM technology

Like the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero, the Strix X870E-E Gaming supports ASUS’ new NitroPath DRAM technology. This technology uses redesigned DRAM slots to deliver increased retention force and reduced noise in ASUS’ DRAM connections. ASUS has claimed that these new DRAM slots enable a near 40% reduction in connection noise levels, enabling higher speed DRAM connections.

ASUS has claimed that this new technology can allow up to 400 MT/s DRAM speeds to be supported. That’s great news for PC builders, as it will allow users to further push the limits of their CPUs and DRAM kits.

ROG Strix X870E-E VS ROG Strix X870-F

When looking at the ROG Strix X870-F Gaming, we get a clear drop in connectivity. Here, we have one fewer PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, fewer USB ports, and a drop to 2.5Gb networking. This lower-end motherboard design also uses standard DRAM slots, not ASUS’ new “NitroPath” slots. While it has more than enough connectivity for the average user, some heavy users will enjoy the extended I/O capabilities of the ROG Strix X870E-E Gaming. That said, the best motherboard for you will come down to your budget and the features you want.
