Intel sets record pricing with their new flagship Xeon 6980P CPU
Intel’s new flagship Xeon CPU pushes a new processor pricing high with $17,800 price tag
Intel has officially launched its new Xeon 6 6900 series of “Granite Rapids” processors, and now the company has officially revealed the pricing of their newest enterprise-grade processors. With its new Xeon flagship, the Xeon 6980P, Intel has set its highest CPU price ever at $17,800. This price tag is listed on Intel’s ARK CPU database.
So what do you get for $17,800? Intel’s Xeon 6980P is a 128-core processor with a TDP of 500 watts and 12-channel DDR5 memory support. With MRDIMM DDR5 memory, this CPU supports memory speeds of up to 8800 MT/s. Across 12 memory channels, that’s a huge amount of potential bandwidth. Overall, this CPU can support up to 3TB of ECC memory. Additionally, this processor features 96 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Note that this CPU is an all-P-Core design.
Compared to AMD’s EPYC “Genoa” 9654 CPU, Intel’s new flagship offers users 32 more cores. AMD’s CPU costs $11,805, making it a much less expensive processor.
Overall, the Intel Xeon 6980P costs $139 per core, which is fairly cost-effective compared to some of Intel’s older Xeon chips. Even so, Intel has set a high bar for CPU pricing. It is indisputable that Intel is now offering more P-cores than its competition. That alone should help Intel slow the rise of AMD in some sections of the datacenter CPU market.
