AMD comments on RX 9070 XT power requirements

AMD promises “worry-free upgrading” as there will be plenty of RX 9070 XT models with 8-pin power connectors

Frank Azor has once again commented on AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT leaks, confirming that all models of their high-end RDNA 4 GPU will not require systems with a 900W or higher PSU. “There will be 9070 XT cards available at launch that will require lower minimum power supply wattages,” Azor stated on Twitter/X.

Frank Azor also stated that there will be plenty of RX 9070 XT GPU models with 8-pin power connectors, allowing for “worry-free upgrading.” This comment comes after a week that has been filled with reports of damaged Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs. GPUs with melted 16-pin (12VHPWR/12V-2×6) power connectors. This kind of power issue simply does not happen with traditional 8-pin PCIe power connectors. That’s why AMD’s Frank Azor calls their RX 9070 XT a “worry-free upgrade.”

Another benefit of 8-pin power connectors is that they are available on all modern power supplies. The same can’t be said for 16-pin power cables. There are plenty of in-warranty power supplies that lack 16-pin power connectors. By using 8-pin power connectors, most AMD RX 9070 XT GPUs will be an easier upgrade option for users of older PSUs. However, there will be some RX 9070 XT models that use 16-pin power connectors.

AMD plans to showcase its RX 9000 series GPUs and RDNA 4 graphics architecture on February 28th. Specifications for AMD’s new RDNA 4 GPUs have recently leaked. However, it remains unknown how fast AMD’s new GPUs. Additionally, their pricing is unknown.
