Nvidia DLSS 4 will launch alongside their RTX 50 series GPUs

DLSS 4 is coming, and it may launch with Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs

It looks like Nvidia is preparing to reveal the next generation of DLSS. A picture of an alleged RTX 5080 retail listing has leaked, and it lists DLSS 4 as an RTX 50 series feature. After the release of this image, the leaker Kopite7kimi commented on the image to say that “DLSS4 is true.”

Last month, Inno3D started to tease the “AI-Enhanced Features” of their next-generation products. This includes “Advanced DLSS Technology,” suggesting that Nvidia planned to update/upgrade its DLSS technology at CES 2025. Now, this change appears to be (somewhat) confirmed.

Sadly, we cannot comment on what DLSS 4 could be. This new version of DLSS could add new features to Nvidia’s DLSS feature set. Remember, DLSS 3 and DLSS 3.5 added new features to the DLSS ecosystem and didn’t deliver significant changes to Nvidia’s core DLSS Super Resolution (AI upscaling) technology. DLSS 3/3.5’s added features were DLSS Frame Generation and DLSS Ray Reconstruction.

With DLSS 4, Nvidia could take their upscaling technology in a new direction. For example, Nvidia could change its DLSS Super Resolution technology to increase image quality further. Nvidia may also create a second-generation frame generation technology that is less latent, more performant, or of higher quality. Another option for Nvidia is to create an entirely new AI feature that will sit under Nvidia’s DLSS banner.

If DLSS 4 is RTX 50 series-only, it could be a controversial add-on for Nvidia. PC gamers didn’t like how DLSS Frame Generation was limited to RTX 40 series (and newer) GPUs, and the same would be true if this were the case for DLSS 4 and Nvidia’s RTX 50 series GPUs.

As it stands, DLSS is one of Nvidia’s key technological pillars within the gaming market. It needs to continue advancing if Nvidia wants to maintain its dominant position. Nvidia can’t allow AMD and Intel to catch up, which is why every new GeForce launch has been accompanied by a new version of DLSS. AMD is preparing to reveal FSR 4 at CES 2025, and Nvidia already has an answer to it.
