Sony’s Mark Cerny has worked on “Big Chunks of RDNA 5” with AMD

AMD’s next-gen GPUs may have some PlayStation tech inside

AMD and Sony PlayStation are collaborating on the future of gaming AI and gaming hardware through “Project Amethyst,” which means that PlayStation will have a significant influence on the next generation of AMD’s GPU technology. Sony PlayStation’s Mark Cerny has confirmed that he has personally worked on RDNA 5, AMD’s next-generation graphics architecture.

Cerny claims that he has worked on “Big chunks of RDNA 5,” confirming that RDNA 5 may not be AMD’s final name for the architecture. AMD has confirmed that its future GPUs will use its “UDNA” graphics architecture, bringing AMD’s Gaming and data center GPU architectures. When Cerny talks about RDNA 5, he is likely talking about the architecture that will become UDNA.

Big chunks of RDNA 5, or whatever AMD ends up calling it, are coming out of engineering I am doing on the project,

And again, this is coming out of trying to move things forward. There are no restrictions on the way any of it can be used.

AMD’s Jack Huynh has stated that Project Amethyst has delivered strong results “faster than expected.” This collaboration created the upscaling algorithm behind FSR 4, and the same algorithm is due to become available on PlayStation 5 Pro in 2026 as a new version of PSSR.

Jack Huynh “Mark [Cerny] makes us [AMD] a better company. We push each other.” Note that AMD and PlayStation are working together on software and hardware. This means that their collaboration will result in better Radeon gaming hardware, new gaming software, and a larger generational leap with PlayStation 6.

If Cerny’s comments are anything to go by, AMD’s RDNA 5/UDNA GPU architecture will have PlayStation’s fingerprints all over it. That’s great news for PC gamers, as most games are made with PlayStation consoles in mind. Tighter integration between AMD and PlayStation will lead to improved AMD gaming hardware. It should also lead to stronger hardware for PlayStation users.
