Frame Generation is coming to “PlayStation Platforms” – Cerny Confirms
Sony’s continuing to work with AMD on new “Project Amethyst” technologies for PlayStation and Radeon
In an interview with Digital Foundry, Sony’s Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for PlayStation 5, confirmed that ML-based (Machine Learning) frame generation would be coming to “PlayStation platforms”. This tech comes as part of Sony’s “Project Amethyst” collaboration with AMD.
Cerny claims that FSR Frame Generation was co-developed by SIE and AMD, and that Sony is “intimately familiar” with the technology. While Sony has “no more releases planned for this year”, Cerny looks forward to discussing this tech in the future. This means that PlayStation’s Frame Generation tech could arrive in 2027. But will it arrive on PS5 Pro, or on newer PlayStation hardware?
Sony has recently rolled out its “improved PSSR” technology. It was co-developed by AMD and Sony as part of Project Amethyst. In fact, it uses the same AI/ML models as AMD’s newly released FSR 4.1 upscaling technology.
“Just to clarify a few things about the collaboration with AMD, the new PSSR uses the same core co-developed algorithm as FSR Redstone’s Upscaling (to avoid confusion, I’ll use the new names today rather than FSR4),” Cerny shared. “FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology (or as my good friend Jack Huynh puts it, ‘co-engineered technology’). I’m very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms.”
“Great questions, particularly considering that FSR Frame Generation is technology that was co-developed between SIE and AMD, we’re intimately familiar with it. All I can say is that we have no more releases planned for this year. And that I look forward to discussing this more in the future!”

A predictable move by Sony – Frame Generation needed to come to PlayStation
Frame Generation is a technology that is too valuable to ignore. Using AI-generated frames can make games feel smoother. It enables high framerates on hardware that would otherwise not be up to the task. It also allows 120Hz and higher refresh rate displays to be utilised more effectively.
While AI-generated frames do not deliver the latency benefits of “real frames”, the smoothness boost is real. As displays reach higher refresh rates, Frame Generation and Multi-Frame Generation will become increasingly valuable technologies for consoles.
At GDC 2026, Microsoft confirmed that its “Project Helix” console would support “ML Multi-Frame Generation” with AMD’s “FSR Next” technology. This is likely the same technology that Sony’s working on with AMD. After all, AMD has no reason to work on two separate ML Frame Generation technologies with Xbox and Sony.
With this in mind, it is likely that Sony’s PlayStation 6 console will support ML Multi Frame Generation. That said, the usefulness of this technology is questionable given the lack of ultra-high refresh rate TVs on the market.
