GAME staff have been told to expect job losses – Another hit to UK gaming retail

Redundancies are expected as GAME moves most of their staff to zero-hour contracts

According to reports from Eurogamer, staff at UK retailer GAME have been told to expect redundancies. At this time the number of job cuts are unknown. Furthermore, most non-managerial staff are expected to be employed under zero-hour contracts moving forward.

The staff affected by these layoffs are should be contacted soon by email or telephone. So far, Game has not commented on these reported layoffs.

This news comes months after GAME UK confirmed that they are phasing out pre-owned game sales. Previously, pre-owned game sales were a staple of this gaming retailer. Soon pre-owned game sales will be a thing of the past. The retailer’s Game Elite reward system is also due to be phased out in the near future.

Recent years have seen GAME downsize significantly, closing many of their UK locations in favour of smaller concessions in other storefronts. GAME is owned by the Frasers Group, who own UK brands like Sports Direct and House of Fraser. Small game locations have popped up in many Sports Direct and House of Fraser locations in recent months.

With the decline of physical media, it makes sense for storefronts like game to be struggling. Online retail and the growth of digital media have both grown and undermined GAME’s business model. Beyond that, UK brands like CEX have grown to become a more popular place to trade-in physical media and buy pre-owned games. All of these factors combined have forced GAME to downsize. Today, GAME is a shadow of its former self, and it looks like the brand may continue to decline.
