PS5 Slim? Sony reveals new PlayStation 5 models with detachable disk drives

Meet the PS5 Slim! Sony has revealed two new PlayStation 5 models

After almost a year of rumours, Sony has officially revealed their new PlayStation 5 slim models. These two new consoles are lighter and smaller than their predecessors, with Sony claiming a 30% reduction in volume over day-1 PS5 systems. Alongside these new consoles, Sony has also revealed a new Ultra HD Bly Ray disk drive add-on, which can be used to upgrade PS5 Digital models to full disk drive consoles. This add-on may also act as a replacement for gamers with broken PlayStation 5 disk drives.

Sony’s new PlayStation 5 consoles also come with 1TB of SSD storage out of the box. This is a notable upgrade over the 825GB of storage that launch day PS5 consoles feature. Sadly, Sony’s new disk drive add-on will not work with older PS5 consoles, giving owners of Sony’s original PS5 Digital Edition consoles no upgrade path. It is also probable that these new PlayStation 5 consoles use a new motherboard revision, making them incompatible with EK’s awesome full cover PlayStation 5 water block.

Sony has confirmed that their new PS5 consoles will be available at retailers this November, and that their disk drive add-on will cost £99.90 in the UK. In the US, Europe, and Japan, the disk drive will cost $79.99, €119.99, and 11,980 JPY respectively.

Having a disk drive on a PS5 gives gamers the ability to play DVDs, Blu Ray/Ultra HD Blu Ray movies, PlayStation 4 disks, and PlayStation 5 disks. This turns a digital edition PS5 into a more fully fledged entertainment system. It is also gives gamers access to physical games, which are often available at lower prices than their digital counterparts. This is especially true for older titles.

No Vertical stand out of the box

One of the downsides of Sony’s new PlayStation revision is its lack of a vertical console stand out of the box. Sony’s original PS5 systems shipped with a vertical/horizontal stand option, but now the systems only comes with a horizontal stand. If you want a vertical console stand, you will need to buy one, and it will cost £24.99 in the UK. While it is a pretty stand, that’s a lot of money for something that was previously free.
