Apple has updated their App Store Guidelines to address “loot boxes”

Love them or hate them, “Loot boxes” is one of today’s hottest topics when it comes to gaming. The discussions regarding this matter have been so fierce that today even legislators have started weighing in on the actions, with many calling for these randomised loot systems to be regulated out banned outright.

Apple has now taken action against “loot boxes” and other “mechanisms that provide randomised virtual items”, forcing app creators to disclose the odds of receiving certain types of items. This change will allow players to be more aware of the risks involved and force app developers to create fairer systems as their odds will be displayed for all to see.

This change will force app developers to give their users a sneak peek into their “loot box” systems, lest they risk their app’s removal from the Apple App Store. Hopefully, Apple will enforce these new regulations on the platform’s pre-existing apps.

Apps offering “loot boxes” or other mechanisms that provide randomized virtual items for purchase must disclose the odds of receiving each type of item to customers prior to purchase.

Apple’s move here is a positive move for consumers, as it moves the odds of paid loot-based systems out of the shadows and into the light. These regulations will help prevent highly rigged systems from being integrated into new mobile apps, as users of these games will be able to determine how much risk they are taking with their purchases.
