Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s RTX support won’t be available in most multiplayer modes
With these GDC announcements comes a new RTX trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Alongside this trailer comes confirmation that the game will feature raytraced shadows, Nvidia Adaptive Shading and “other” Nvidia gaming technologies.Â
In addition to this, Nvidia has confirmed that the game’s promised RTX mode will be limited to specific game modes. RTX Shadows will only be available in the game’s singleplayer campaign and 2 VS 2 Gunfight modes. This means that most of the game’s multiplayer modes will lack support for raytracing.  Â
In Modern Warfare, ray traced shadows are likely to have a minimal impact on the game’s overall look, aside from creating more accurate, diffuse shadows. Most of the game’s visual will remain identical, but shadows will appear more accurate due to more accurate simulations of scene lighting, as area lights will become viable, and shadows will be cast from smaller objects which could otherwise be missed by the game’s standard lighting system.Â
Raytraced shadows is a use of Nvidia’s RTX that we see people disliking as a whole, as while more accurate shadows are good, it doesn’t provide the same night and day difference that raytraced reflections and raytraced global illumination can provide. As a whole, shadows will look different with RTX enabled, but whether or not they look better will be subjective. Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s use of RTX Shadows is an example of this. ÂCall of Duty: Modern Warfare is due to release on October 25th, with a PC beta coming on September 19th. More information about this beta will be released soon.Â
