Mavericks: Proving Ground – The MMO with a 400-player Battle Royale mode

Automaton has revealed the PVP portion of their 1,000 player MMO, a Battle Royale-style game called Mavericks: Proving Ground, which aims to offer both high levels of graphical fidelity as well as a vast game scale.

With most modern multiplayer games it is difficult to deliver both of these feats, with today’s large Battle Royale titles offering what many would consider disappointing graphics. Automaton gets around this issue by using Improbable’s SpatialOS technology, which changes the way that traditional game servers function facilitate larger worlds and a greater level of environmental detail.

SpatialOS allows game makers to take a distributed approach to game servers, allowing environments to become more complex and for unprecedented levels of detail to be attained in a 400-player PVP gaming experience. Mavericks is set to have environmental destruction, roaming wildlife, fire/water effects and a dynamic weather system, which is a big ask given how smaller games like PUBG run.

Proving Ground is set to be capable of handling 400 players at once, who will compete in a 12 km square map with a “living breathing” world that features wildlife and objective other than being the last man, or woman standing.

Instead of having the chance of winning a chicken dinner, players will be rewarded with a range of rewards based on how they play the game, with in-game social hubs and a range of other activities that will be added to the game over time.

The Technology behind Mavericks has been in development for two years, with the game’s PVP mode being set to release later this year. A wider launch of the full MMO experience is set to come sometime in 2019, though we will have to wait for Automaton to reveal more information about their product.
