Nvidia updates Portal with RTX with DLSS 3.5 and RTX IO

Portal with RTX has just received visual and loading time upgrades

In 2022, Nvidia created a new version of Portal using their RTX technologies, enhancing the game with path tracing, new textures, models, and other enhancements. Portal with RTX is a look at what is achievable with Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology, a toolset that can be used to enhance classic PC games.

Nvidia has now updated Portal with RTX with their latest RTX technologies. These technologies include DLSS 3.5, and RTX IO. With DLSS 3.5, Nvidia has updated their existing DLSS technologies (super resolution, and Frame Generation) to their latest versions, and had added Ray Reconstruction into the mix.

Ray Reconstruction is a new addition to Nvidia’s DLSS technologies that enhances the visual fidelity of ray tracing effects using an AI algorithm. It works on all Nvidia RTX GPUs (not just the RTX 40 series), and replaces multiple denoising algorithms. Nvidia’s ray reconstruction tech can make smarter use of data than other denoisers by recognising different ray tracing effects. This allows DLSS ray reconstruction to often perform better than competing denoising solutions while generating better visual results.

The video below showcases DLSS 3.5 with Ray Reconstruction in action. Note how Ray Reconstruction delivers more detailed visuals. This is especially true for the video’s chain link fence.

Portal with RTX receives an RTX IO update

With RTX IO, Nvidia can use GPU-based loading to speed up data decompression times. This accelerated IO performance can allow games to load faster and for CPU utilisation to be lowered. Below, we can see a 7.16 second load time get lowered to 1.41 seconds.

RTX IO is Nvidia’s special implementation of Microsoft DirectStorage. It is currently available in Portal: Prelude RTX and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

Thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS technologies, the company’s enhanced version of Portal now looks better than ever. With DLSS 3.5, the game runs much faster than it does when natively rendered. This is thanks to the combined effects of DLSS Super Resolution, DLSS Frame Generation, and DLSS Ray Reconstruction. These technologies make Portal’s enhanced RTX version playable on modern Nvidia-based PCs.

Nvidia’s new version of Portal with RTX is now available on Steam. This enhanced version of the game is free for all owners of Portal on Steam. If you own a strong enough GeForce RTX GPU, the game is certainly worth trying out with all of Nvidia’s bells and whistles.
