Portal 2 looks awesome with RTX

An RTX Remix compatibility mod for Portal 2 is now available

In 2022, Nvidia created Portal with RTX, a showcase of Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology that upgrades Valve’s classic puzzle game with the latest GeForce technologies. This included ray tracing and DLSS. In time, the mod received updates to add DLSS Ray Reconstruction, RTX IO and more. Now, modders are giving Portal 2 the same RTX treatment, modding the game to enable RTX Remix compatibility.

Nvidia’s RTX Remix technology doesn’t work with every game. It only works with DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games with fixed-function pipelines. As such, Nvidia’s Remix technology isn’t compatible with Portal 2. That said, that hasn’t stopped modders from creating a compatibility tool. This tool makes most things in Portal 2 use a fixed-function pipeline and makes other changes to make the game run better with Nvidia’s RTX Remix tools.

Portal 2 looks great with Nvidia’s Remix tools. However, this mod is clearly a work in progress. Some areas of Portal 2 are overly dark, which means that some adjustments to lighting will be necessary. Additionally, some game effects look glitchy. This should be fixed with further updates.

Below is a video showcasing this mod in action. It was created by Jacob Freeman, Nvidia’s GeForce Evangelist. Note that the gameplay below is 4K footage that was captured on an RTX 4080 SUPER with DLSS 3.5 enabled with Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction.

For now, users of this mod shouldn’t expect all of Portal 2 to be playable. That said, this is a great starting point for Portal 2 fans who want a ray-traced remaster of the game.
